Hoodia Gordonii is a leafless, cactus-like plant that grows in hot climates that include the Kalahari Desert, Botswana, Namibia, Angola and other areas of South Africa. This plant is often mistaken for a cactus but is actually a succulent plant. The Hoodia Gordonii plant has the ability to suppress appetite and promote weight loss.
There are 21 types of this plant but only the Hoodia Gordonii is believed to contain the natural appetite suppressant that helps people reduce their caloric intake by 30 to 50%. Research has shown that Hoodia is not only the most effective appetite suppressant, but also a successful mood enhancer. Scientists believe it contains a special molecule that fools the mind into thinking that the body has eaten and is full.
History of Hoodia Gordonii
Hoodia Gordonii has been used by the San (an indigenous tribal people in South Africa) as a natural appetite suppressant and thirst quencher during long hunting trips for hundreds of years. It is the source of energy that has helped them sustain the long, hard hunts for food in sweltering conditions. In 1963, scientists at South Africa's national laboratory began studying Hoodia and discovered the active ingredient in Hoodia, a steroidal glycoside, which they named P-57. In 1998 pharmaceutical giant Pfizer decided to develop Hoodia as an appetite suppressing supplement.
How It Works
According to research, Hoodia helps you reduce your food intake by about 1,000 calories per day. Due to its appetite suppressing properties, it is recognized as a wonder plant for weight loss. The active ingredient, P-57, tricks the mind into believing that the stomach is full. The active ingredients of Hoodia are released into the mouth where they reach the blood vessels under the tongue. The blood flow takes it to an area of brain which is sensitive to the appetite and tricks the mind into thinking that the body is no longer hungry.
Advantages of Hoodia Gordonii
- A safe appetite suppressant without any major side effects.
- A thirst quencher.
- No adverse effects.
- A cure for severe abdominal cramps, hemorrhoids, tuberculosis, indigestion, hypertension and diabetes.
- Causes a significant reduction in the average daily caloric intake.
Side Effects
No side effects have been reported from eating Hoodia or taking the P-57 molecule. It is believed that bushmen have been eating this herb for ages with no adverse effects but a researcher at Pfizer declared that there were indications of unwanted effects on the liver. Scientist believe that if Hoodia does affect liver function, it may also interact with medications. However, this effect is under research and has not been proven.
Types of Hoodia Gordonii
Hoodia Gordonii is available in the form of a capsule, powder, liquid, or tea in health food stores and on the internet. Hoodia pills are easily available in the market. You should make sure that you choose a Hoodia supplement that is free of stimulants and additives. |
